Norway is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Europe, with a population of just about 5 million. The Scandinavian country is known for its beautiful mountainous terrain and a vast coastline. As a result, Norway provides a multitude of opportunities for both locals and immigrants looking to settle.

Residence and Work Permits

Citizens belonging to certain countries need a visa to visit Norway. The type of visa you may require totally depends on the reason for your visit. If you wish to work in Norway, you will, as a general rule require a residence permit. Here you’ll find several different types of residence permits for working in Norway and the type of permit that you get depends on the nature of your work. Below are the types of residence and work permits :

Skilled Worker

Different conditions apply to you depending on the type of permit you need as a skilled worker. You must have at least a training certificate equivalent to upper secondary education level, in your particular field. University-level education or other special qualifications that are in high demand pertaining to the industry in Norway will also fulfill the educational requirements needed to apply under this category.

Individuals that can apply for a Skilled Worker Residence/Work Permit include:

  • A researcher with own funds
  • Skilled worker
  • Service provider, a self-employed contractor
  • Service provider seconded employees
  • Self-employed persons
  • International companies
  • Ethnic cooks
  • Seafarers on board foreign ships
  • Athlete/trainers

Unskilled Worker

Unskilled workers for jobs that do not necessarily require a certain degree of education, training or skill, can apply for a residence/ work visa under this category. Seasonal workers and seafarers onboard Norwegian ships can also apply under this category.

Seasonal workers are allowed to do jobs that can only be carried out during specific parts of the year. Odd jobs such as carpentry, painting and other mechanical work do not come under this permit. Although this visa does not have any very formal educational or skill requirements, yet it does require the applicant to be over the age of 18 and have a solid job offer to show in your application.

An individual with an unskilled seasonal workers permit cannot stay in Norway for more than six months in one year.
